Members of the Stafford County Sheriff's Office were called on Friday night when an 82-year-old man required assistance after flipping his SUV and landing on the roof.

Deputies were called to the 1900 block of Mountain View Road at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 where there were reports of an SUV that had flipped over and was upside down with the driver trapped inside.

A deputy was able to gain access to the vehicle by breaking a back window, while fire and rescue personnel were called in to assist the driver from Stafford - who has not been identified - safely out of the vehicle.

Further investigation led to the discovery of multiple open containers of beer, according to investigators.

"After being extracted from the vehicle, it was observed that the driver had signs of intoxication," a spokesperson for the sheriff's office said. "He would admit to consuming two beers prior to getting behind the wheel."

The driver was taken to an area hospital for injuries sustained in the crash, where he is being held while charges for DUI are pending.
